Media guide

Shout about it!

Gaining publicity for your run will help you raise funds and raise awareness
of brain tumours and our work so please help us by contacting your local media and promoting your running and fundraising efforts.

Ways to raise your profile:

  • Contact your local papers, TV and radio stations – don’t forget to include online journalists.  You can use the press release templates to do this.
  • Always include a general overview of SDBTT and brain tumours (available on the press release template).
  • Set up your online giving page at www.mydonate.bt.com, then post links to it via your social media pages and email it to all your contacts.
  • Use social media to its max. Set up a FB page and/or event, post regular updates/pictures/tweets about your progress and afterwards tell everyone how your run went and how much you raised!

Targeting your local paper:

  • Find out who your local journalist is – most local papers will have someone dedicated to the area you live in – buy a copy of the paper or look them up online.
  • Find out their publishing deadlines – and get your info to them in plenty of time.
  • Send them info about you and your event in advance – do this by email then follow up with a phone call.  Use the pre-event press release template to do this and attach a picture of you/the person who inspired you to take part in, or hold, this event.
  • Tell them why you’re doing this event and what you’re looking forward to (and if it’s an extreme challenge or first time run for example, what you’re dreading can also be interesting) – personal stories are always more inspiring.
  • Invite the journalist and/or a photographer to your event if applicable.
  • Get your friends and family to take high quality pictures on the day – pre, post and during the race!
  • Send your pictures and an updated press release, including your fundraising amount and a quote on the experience of the day to the journalist as soon as possible after the run, use the post-event press release template to do this.
  • Include your contact details.

  • Helpful hints and areas to change / personalise are highlighted
  • Don’t forget to write in the third person (he/she rather than I)
  • If you are an Umbrella/Friends group, ensure you mention this and the name of your fund – you can add a couple of lines in under the SDBTT information on the second page as well, i.e. how long you’re been established, amount raised so far
  • Don’t forget to remove the highlighting before sending!

Please do get in touch if you’d like some help in what to put in the personalised areas.
