Paul’s Fund and Paul’s Place, Croyde
Paul’s Fund is a charitable trust that will pay for young adults (aged approximately 18 to 30) to have a much needed holiday break at Paul’s Place, a B&B and place of retreat with self catering facilities near Croyde on the North Devon coast. Those eligible are young adults who have been bereaved, diagnosed with a life threatening or terminal illness, or who are themselves providing a significant long term caring role for a family member. The fund will also pay for close family and friends accompanying them. The Fund was set up by David and Pippa Morton following the death of their son Paul in November 2008 from a brain tumour at just 19 years old.

The Grove Hotel, Bournemouth
The Grove in Bournemouth is a nonprofit hotel, owned and operated by the Charity Macmillan Caring Locally. The hotel was opened in June 2011 after a complete refurbishment. The aim is to provide short breaks and holidays for people who suffer from cancer and other life threatening illnesses, as well as members of their family and carers.
There are 30 rooms all with a private bathroom, one of which is fully Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant with electric remote control bed, body dryer and recliner chair. Two more bedrooms have bathrooms that are DDA compliant and suitable for wheelchair access.
General Manager Brenden Howard said “Since opening in June we have been very busy and have had really positive feedback from our guests. Our task now is to let as many people know about The Grove as possible, so that people from all over the UK can benefit from this wonderful facility.” Brenden added, “People suffering from a life threatening illness are naturally worried about medical support in the location where they have booked a holiday, in case they are taken ill. We have a qualified nurse on call 24 hours each day in case of emergency, so people can be confident of help should they require it.”
Based on the East Cliff in Bournemouth the location is good for public transport, has a level walk to the cliff top and all of the town’s many amenities are close by. There is a lift that runs down to the beach for most of the year and those in wheelchairs along with their carers can go for free.
