Groups Explained

Regular supporters who are raising money either in memory of a loved one or for someone living with a brain tumour can decide to form an SDBTT Umbrella Group or a Friends of SDBTT Group. These Groups fundraise under the banner or ‘umbrella’ of SDBTT, but in the name of their loved one. There are now just under 60 Groups all around the country, helping us to fight this devastating disease. All Groups are raising funds on a regular on-going basis for the charity, and yet keep their own identity. The Groups have so far raised nearly £2million between them over the past 8 years, and their support has been essential in enabling the charity to become the largest dedicated brain tumour charity in the UK, funding vital research patient support.

Umbrella Groups

For Umbrella Groups, our aim is for each individual Group to raise £10,000 – £15,000 each year on an ongoing basis. The Group will have its own logo, which can be printed on stickers and posters, etc; and incorporates the name of the charity and the Umbrella Group. We will also prepare Gift Aid forms, standing order forms and sponsorship forms specific to the Group. The Group will have its own webpage on the SDBTT site and a specific flyer, which can both be updated with the details of the Group and their current events. Groups will be regularly updated on the income and expenditure on their fund, and they are also permitted to express a preference about how the money raised might be spent (please read more about this under ‘How the money you raise is spent’).

Friends of SDBTT Groups

For Friends of SDBTT Groups, the aim would be for the Group to raise around £2,000 – £10,000 each year, and is intended for those who are keen to get involved, but want a different level of commitment from an Umbrella Group. The Group can be named after a loved one, and will be regularly updated on the total raised. They can include information about upcoming events on the Charity’s website, and will also have an opportunity to be featured in the Charity’s newsletter.

All Groups are able to share our Registered Charity Number, and receive collecting tins and buckets, pens, copies of the latest newsletter, pin badges for special supporters, and lots of information and ideas on fundraising. They will receive regular updates on what SDBTT and its fundraiser groups are doing and what research is being funded. All banking will be handled by the Charity’s Head Office, and to assist the finance team in recording the Group’s income correctly it is important that all monies are clearly marked with the name of the Group.

Our aim in setting up these Groups is to allow people to fundraise using their own name, but without the worry and stress of setting up and running their own charity. We can do so much more by working together to share resources, which in turn raises more awareness and more funding for research in a concerted effort to find a cure for this devastating disease. Only with your support can we continue to make breakthroughs and improve the outlook for people affected by this disease.
