Research programme grant round – call for expressions of interest
Status: closed for expressions of interest
Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust invested in its first programme grant in 2008, to establish the Samantha Dickson Brain Cancer Unit at UCL. We are now looking to make a further strategic investment in another UK institution.
We are inviting institutions to express their interest in applying for a grant of this nature. The deadline for expressions of interest was 29th March 2012. Further details of the vision and scale for these grants can be found in our call for expressions of interest.
Project Grant Round 2012 for funding studies into brain tumours
Status: closed for outline applications
Assessment of outline applications for a grants for brain tumour research projects is in progress. Grant applications, peer review and awards will be managed and run through our AMRC-approved grant round process. Funding would be fully eligible for Charities Research Support Fund (CRSF) funding based on current government policy.
SDBTT is a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) and was awarded their Certificate of Best Practice in Research Peer Review for a second time in 2011.
Research area focus
This grant round covers all types of primary brain tumour, including pituitary tumours. This grant round does not cover secondary/metastatic brain tumour research or clinical trials which are covered by an alternative grant round (details above). Research includes basic science, translational, epidemiological, psycho-social and quality of life and health services research.
Funding available and success rates
Applications were invited for SDBTT funding of £40,000 – £215,000 for research projects of 1-3 years duration (preferably 3 years). A maximum of £75,000 of SDBTT funding is available in any one year. In our last grant round in 2009-10, 10% of applications were funded.
Matched funding
In this grant round, applicants are strongly encouraged to secure matched funding from an Institution or other source (for example, a Charitable Trust or Foundation or local charity) towards the proposed project so that together we can increase the total levels of funding for brain tumour research in the UK. This is not a requirement but will be taken into consideration when making final funding decisions. We recognise that it may not be possible to precisely quantify matched funding at the outline application stage. If you are subsequently invited to submit a full application you will be required to provide evidence of a firm commitment for any matched funding you declare. Matched funding is described further in the Terms and Conditions of Award for Research Grants 2012.
Eligibility
Projects must have a principal investigator in the UK, although international collaboration is encouraged. Individuals could submit a maximum of two applications for which they are the Principal Investigator. Principal investigators must hold an established NHS, academic or research post and be in receipt of a salary for the duration of the award. Equipment only grants will not be funded in this grant round. In order to be eligible to apply to this grant round, those applicants who have previously held an SDBTT grant that finished two or more years ago will normally be required to have published findings arising from the grant in a peer reviewed scientific journal. This and further information about eligibility may be found in the Research Strategy for Project Grant Round 2012.
Application Process
A two stage application process will be used, involving outline and full applications. Short outline applications form the basis for an initial round of peer review, before full applications are requested from the applicants who are successful at this stage. This reduces the time and input from the majority of applicants, as well as the workload for external peer reviewers and for our expert Grant Review and Monitoring committee (GRAM). This process is consistent with AMRC best practice policies.
Find out more about the outline application stage – this stage is now closed.
Find out more about the full application stage – this stage is not yet open.
