HeadSmart– be brain tumour aware is a major new campaign from Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust (SDBTT), developed in collaboration with doctors and researchers from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Children’s Brain Tumour Research Centre at the University of Nottingham, with funding from The Health Foundation and SDBTT.
HeadSmart – be brain tumour aware aims to raise national awareness of the common signs and symptoms of a brain tumour in children and young people by equipping parents, patients and GPs with the knowledge they need to be ‘brain tumour aware’. It provides practical resources, including:
-
A dedicated HeadSmart website consisting of information for health professionals and the public about the common signs and symptoms of brain tumours, and what to do if they see them.
- A set of age-specific symptom cards to guide parents and young people on when to see a doctor.
-
‘The diagnosis of brain tumours in children’ guideline for health professionals, including when they should refer a patient for a brain scan.
-
An A5 leaflet which provides more detailed information on the signs and symptoms of brain tumours in children and young people.
-
Posters to promote the campaign.
Brain tumours are the leading cause of childhood cancer deaths in the UK. Around 500 children and young people in the UK are diagnosed each year and, on average, it takes over three months for them to receive an accurate diagnosis – that’s roughly three times longer than in countries such as Canada. We hope that the HeadSmart – be brain tumour aware campaign will lead to quicker diagnoses and improved outcomes for those affected by a brain tumour.
